Supporting the candidacy of Metropolitan Neophytus of Morphou in the upcoming archiepiscopal elections.

With the falling-asleep of Archbishop Chrysostom ΙΙ of Cyprus and after the relevant decisions of the Holy Council of the Church of Cyprus (14 Nov. 2022), we have entered the pre-electional stage of nominating a new archbishop for our island. We are a group of Cypriot Orthodox Christians who support the candidacy of Metropolitan Neophytus of Morphou for many reasons.

His Eminence is a traditional Orthodox Roman (Romios), in possession of a deep theological and legal education, having complete knowledge of the history of our Orthodox Orient, continual discipleship at the feet of the authentic Holy Tradition of Orthodoxy, with a clean spiritual life. He is a genuine child of the folk piety of Cyprus and of the contemporary holy elders Iakovos Tsalikis, Eumenius Saridakis, Athanasius of Stavrovouni, and [other] men of God. He especially esteems and respects the priceless cultural heritage of our land. For this reason, from the moment he took charge of the Metropolis of Morphou, he has multifariously given prominence to her boundless wealth of relics, repairing and renovating churches and monasteries from the ground up, restoring hundreds of historical relics, creating treasuries for icons and setting up relevant exhibitions, as well as publishing a great number of informative guides.

For many years, with his homilies and publications of spiritual books, he has been rightly dividing the word of truth of the Orthodox dogma and ethos. He carries on the experiential teaching of the Fathers of the Church concerning the therapeutic treatment of the mind and heart according to the Orthodox anthropology, which is unfortunately rare in our day, thus upbuilding and guiding a host of faithful worldwide to the authentic Christian life. He knows how to choose competent co-workers for his successful and diverse work.

He straightforwardly supported, bravely and at a cost, the Orthodox positions in the face of contemporary challenges and trials (the Council of Kolymbari in Crete, the Ukrainian question, the Coronavirus epidemic, etc.) and did not hesitate to bring forth the prophetic word of older and contemporary saints, who prophesied concerning what we are living through today and what we shall live through. As he has shown to this day with his diverse pastoral work, he has proven a genuine father and teacher of the Orthodox Faith, both for clergymen and for his many lay spiritual children—and our troubled age has great need of true spiritual fatherhood.

He sincerely loves the entirety of Cyprus, having repeatedly and multifariously shown his support for our regions that are enslaved to the Turks. He officiated at the celebration of liturgies and took the lead in conserving and restoring churches. He has a “governing spirit” and a wider, political speech and, finally, a powerful vision for the future course of the Church in Cyprus.

For all these reasons and more, we believe that Neophytus of Morphou completely fulfills all the prerequisites for ascending to the archiepiscopal throne of Cyprus, and with God he has the strength, the potential, and the deep desire to display the local church in her ancient beauty, unto the glory of God and for the spiritual benefit of Orthodox Christians everywhere.
